Adaptive Programs

The Adaptive Programs here at the Bloomsburg Area YMCA provide vital physical activity to children and adults who have been diagnosed with special needs. The YMCA is a place for all individuals of all abilities to play, exercise, laugh, and learn. 

Adaptive Recreation

The Adaptive Recreation Program is a recreation-based program with a variety of adaptive sports & game opportunities available for youth, 3-15, with disabilities. This program is designed to introduce the participants to a wide range of physical activity ventures. This program will be led and monitored by exercise, sports, and adaptive recreation professionals. This class is on Wednesdays from 5:15-6:00. Adaptive Sports

This program is offered in months that Adaptive Recreation is not in-session. The Parent and Me program sees children ages 3-15 with special needs rotate between stations as they learn and master skills on a select sport. 

Adaptive Fitness

Adaptive Fitness is led by our wonderful Group Exercise Instructor Denise. This class is for young adults with special needs in the community. The hour-long class takes place on Wednesday nights at 4:30 and Thursday mornings at 11 with the goal to enhance stability, mobility, and spatial awareness.

Application

The higher number of volunteers we have, the higher number of children we can have enrolled in the Adaptive Recreation program. We are looking for volunteers 16 and older to help make this program the best it can possibly be. This program gives volunteers the opportunity to experience working with children with special needs, allows for collaboration and implementation of ideas, and provides children with special needs a great way to have physical activity.
